2017 Wedding Food Trends

Food has become a very important part of wedding receptions for today’s couples. Not only is the dinner menu of concern, but many couples opt to include late night snacks or favorite food inspired favors for their guests. Below is a list of our Wedding Experts’ favorite wedding food trends for 2017.

Moonlight Menus

Andover Country Club WeddingsOne of the biggest trends we see for weddings in 2017 is to include a light snack style menu at the end of the big celebration. Usually, these menus are full of snack foods, desserts, and finger foods. Our Moonlight Menu features fun and creative foods that are perfect for refueling after a long night of dancing. Whether it’s a churro station or french fry bar, your guests will love these delicious treats and will appreciate having things to snack on at the end of the night!

Weddings at Andover Country ClubApple Cider Doughnuts aren’t just for breakfast anymore as they’ve become a popular item we see on wedding dessert tables or as guest favors. These sweets are our favorite for New England Fall weddings and give off a “home-made” and nostalgic feel your guests will love.

Signature Cocktails

AL_sneak peek_0005Signature cocktails are a fun way to personalize your reception. To pick the perfect signature cocktail, start with your favorite spirit and try to find a recipe you both love. You can even match your signature cocktail to your wedding colors to keep with the theme. We also like the idea of offering a nonalcoholic “mocktail” for those who don’t drink!

From Our Golf Course Superintendent: The Perfect Lawn Care Plan

Last year’s drought caused a great deal of damage to not only golf courses, but lawns as well. Andover Country Club Golf Course Superintendent, Wayne LaCroix, shares his simple care plan to help your lawn recover from drought damage.

Lawn Drought Recovery Care

Very few lawns were left untouched by the damage done by the drought and the water restrictions. These conditions allowed for weed seed, dandelion, crabgrass, and other unwanted weeds to take hold of lawns. If damaged areas haven’t been reseeded or replaced with sod, they should be done as soon as possible.

  1. Your lawn care plan should start in early spring. Sometime during April is when you should treat your lawn with a fertilizer that has a crabgrass control component.
  2. The next step is to use a weed & feed fertilizer. This can be done any time between the first week of May and the second week of June. In some cases, it can be done later, but not this year!
  3. The third step is to fertilize your lawn with a fertilizer that has grub and insect control. Ideally this should be done during the first week of July, but can be done any time between the second week of June through July.
  4. In early September, you should use a slow release fertilizer that has no phosphorous and is a minimum of 50%-75% slow release.
  5. During the fall, around mid-October, you should fertilize again with a fertilizer that is a 25-50% slow release.
  6. Lastly, around the end of November, you should test your soil to determine how much lime you will need. Generally, you will need 10-25lbs per 1,000 square feet.

A simple way to remember the majority of application dates is to work them around the holidays.

  1. Passover – Easter
  2. Mother’s Day
  3. Father’s Day to Independence Day
  4. Labor Day
  5. Columbus Day
  6. Thanksgiving Day

Andover Country Club features an 18-hole championship course originally conceived and adapted to the natural contour of the land by course architect, W.H. Follet and completed upon his death by the famed designer Donald Ross.

Why is Golf Course Aeration Important?

Andover Country Club Golf Course
What is aeration?

The most common type of aeration is core aeration. Core aeration is when a machine physically removes small soil cores that are usually ½” in diameter from the greens. The holes that are left behind during this process are then filled with sand, which allows for the excess moisture in the ground to evaporate so the grass can grow stronger roots and tolerate the traffic better.

Why do we need it?

Aeration is healthy for the greens because it allows for better drainage after rain or irrigation. Without aeration, the grass becomes like a sponge and has excessive organic matter which causes a lack of root growth, lower oxygen levels in the soil, and it encourages disease, all of which could lead to turf failure. If aeration is not done regularly enough then the surface becomes soft and prone to marks from foot prints and balls which makes for an inconsistent playing surface.

When should the course be aerated?

The best time for aeration to occur is when the turf is healthy and actively growing.  This will allow for a quicker recovery of the turf and for the smooth conditions of the turf to return. This may cause a disruption for players, but, in the long run, is healthiest for the turf.

What are the other types of aeration?

A less disruptive type of aeration is when smaller holes are used to vent the turf to improve the amount of oxygen in the soil. This type of aeration has a smaller impact on the surface and, therefore, won’t impact players as much as other types of aeration.

At Andover Country Club, we do our best to keep our golf course in tip-top shape. As a New England and Boston area country club, it’s crucial for us to perform constant maintenance on our course due to variable weather patterns. Our grounds crew performed aeration in the middle of April and will perform another round at the end of August.

USGA Implements New Video Review Rules

Golf Blog

The USGA and R&A have implemented two new rules that have the golf world buzzing.  These rules come after Lexi Thompson lost in the first LPGA major of the season.  A fan called in a potential infraction and it was determined that she was in violation of improperly replacing her marked ball and not returning the ball to its original spot.  She was assessed a two shot penalty for this.

New Rules

  1. The first of the two new rules states call-ins will still be allowed and that “the use of video technology can make it possible to identify things that could not be seen with the naked eye.”  This standard does not mean that those players who receive more airtime will then be held to a higher standard.  Players will not be penalized for infractions if the committee determines that the infraction was not clearly seen by the naked eye and the player was not otherwise aware of the infraction.  Even if a video shows an infraction, if it was not clearly visible by the naked eye and the player was unaware then the player will not be assessed a penalty.
  2. The second rule states that players cannot be held to the same degree of precision that video technology would provide.  This “applies when a player determines a spot, point, position, line, area, distance or other location in applying the Rules.”  It is this rule that applies to Thompson. A player’s judgement will be accepted as long as their actions can be considered reasonably expected under the given circumstances even if a later video review shows otherwise.

Pete de Seour Cookies

From The Andover Country Club Kitchen

Andover Country Club Executive Chef, Elaine Chirichiello, showed us how to make traditional Pete de Seour Cookies!  These delicious and flaky cookies are super easy to make and the perfect solution for leftover pie crust dough!Pete De Seour 2

  • Pie crust dough
  • Molasses
  • Butter
  • Brown Sugar

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease cookie sheet with cooking spray and then spread molasses with a pastry brush on to the cookie sheet. The molasses will create a sweet and crunchy coating to the bottom of the cookies.

Pete De Seour 4

Roll out left over pie dough until it is the same thickness you would use for a pie shell. Use flour as needed to keep the dough from sticking to the surface of the rolling pin.

Pete De Seour 3

Once the dough is completely rolled out, brush softened butter on to the dough.

Pete De Seour 5

Add a fairly thick layer of brown sugar on to the dough on top of the layer of softened butter.

Pete De Seour 6

Take the edge of the dough on the long side and start folding towards you. Roll the dough into a long cylinder.

Pete De Seour 7

Seal the rolled dough with more of the softened butter to keep the pinwheels together. Slice into 1/2″ pinwheels.

Pete De Seour 7 (1)

Place the pinwheels on the molasses coated cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees.

Pete De Seour 8

The end result are warm and flaky cookies with a crunchy molasses coating on the bottom. Enjoy!

Real Weddings at Andover Country Club: Alyssa & Brian

On February 18, 2017 after eight years of dating, Brian and Alyssa wed at the Immaculate Conception Parish in Newburyport, Massachusetts and held their wedding reception at Andover Country Club on Boston’s North Shore. The couple met at Bentley University while Alyssa was visiting a friend and sparks flew.

How Alyssa Said “Yes”

Alyssa and Brian got engaged on July 3, 2015 on Seabrook Beach during the sunrise. Brian’s family owns a beach cottage there, so it was an extra special spot for the couple. Afterwards, friends and family came over for an engagement celebration!

The Details

  • First Dance Song: “I Got You” by Jack Johnson
  • Wedding Reception Decor & Theme: The couple didn’t have an exact theme, but went for a simple and romantic style. Family and friends were incorporated into the decor through a picture display of the couple’s favorite memories. The bridesmaids wore black strapless, floor-length dresses by Bill Levkoff, with the groom and groomsmen in black suits. The bride and two maids-of-honor carried red flowers with the remaining bridesmaids carrying white flowers. Centerpieces were beautifully simple with mercury flower pots and white hydrangeas and roses reseting on circle glass mirrors.
  • The Food: The couple had a plated salad to start, but decided to go with a buffet for the main course. Guests were given a variety of food stations to choose from, including: Sirloin (carved to order), Baked Haddock, Chicken Picatta, Roasted Potatoes, and Spring Vegetables. There were two separate buffet stations so guests weren’t waiting in line for their meals.
  • The Dress: The bride’s dress was Stella by Maggie Sottero in all white with a corset back. It was the last dress Alyssa tried on at Precious Memories in Malden, Massachusetts and she knew immediately it was “the one.”
  • The First Look: The couple went with a traditional approach and skipped the “first look.” It was very important to Alyssa and Brian that they first see each other at the altar.

The Couple’s Favorite Moment

Alyssa and Brian’s favorite moment was during their first dance song. The bridal party was standing in line with their arms around each other swaying back and forth, singing Jack Johnson’s “I Got You.” The couple noticed and we started singing along.

Biggest Wedding Day Fears

The couple was most nervous about forgetting to execute certain details, but, in the end, everything worked out perfectly fine!

The Wedding Planning Experience at Andover Country Club:

“Everyone was so helpful at Andover Country Club. They did an amazing job at making sure we didn’t have to worry about a thing on the day of the wedding. Kate Crayton was our coordinator and she helped make my vision for the day a reality. The front desk was also so helpful and accommodating while we were booking the hotel rooms for our guests.”

Their Wedding Planning Advice:

“Organization! Being organized will create less stress in the month/week leading up to your wedding. It can’t hurt to plan in advance and check things off the list ahead of time. I used the checklist on The Knot to help me stay on track with the planning. To the groom, planning a wedding can be extremely stressful, especially if it’s just one person doing all the work. I was very lucky that Brian actually enjoyed (some) of the wedding planning. It was fun to share our vision of what we wanted for our big day and making it happen. Lastly, have fun! Planning a wedding should be a happy and fun time not a stressful, tiresome experience.”

Why We Love New England Country Club Weddings

Dramatic golf course views, classic elegance, and a private setting are just a few reasons why we love country club weddings.

Country clubs seem like a traditional and safe choice when it comes to wedding venues, but the benefits these spaces offer can be very appealing to the couple who wants it all. Here are a few reasons why we love the classic appeal country clubs offer to those about to say “I Do.”

Epic Golf Course Views

Andover Country Club WeddingsCombine a sunset and golf course greens and you have the perfect backdrop for wedding photography. At Andover Country Club, we even provide couples with a “Just Married” golf cart as a cute photo prop (and for means of transportation around the grounds).

Gourmet Fare

Andover Country Club Menu

Many country clubs are known for the high-end quality of their cuisine and for having  a variety of menu options. While you may think food costs would be out of your price range, many clubs will work with each couple individually to determine a package cost that best fits their clients’ needs. We do this with many of our couples and not only is it budget friendly, but it makes your wedding day completely customizable.

Luxurious Ballrooms

Andover Country Club Ballroom

Classic ballrooms offer everything a couple could need in a ceremony or reception space. Built in dance floors and bars, tables and chairs, all the necessary space for band and DJ equipment, lighting, and a weather friendly alternative. Indoor spaces also offer extra decor elements such as uplighting, open air photo booth space, chandeliers, and extravagant linens.

Golf, Enough Said

Andover Country Club Golf Course

For couples that enjoy playing golf, country clubs offer the ideal spot for planning a wedding weekend. Getting a round of golf in before the rehearsal dinner or ceremony is that more convenient and is a great activity to shake off any nerves.

A Venue That Has It All

Getting married at a country club means you won’t need to solicit much help from other vendors. We offer our couples outdoor ceremony space, ballroom reception space with tables, chairs, and linens, uplighting, an in-house culinary team, on-site hotel rooms, a bridal suite, and complimentary wedding planners.
